Description
A comforting dish of juicy Salisbury steak patties served over creamy mashed potatoes, all smothered in savory gravy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg (or flax egg for a vegan option)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or butter)
- 1 cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
- 2 lbs potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet)
- 1/2 cup milk (or almond milk)
- 4 tablespoons butter (or olive oil)
Instructions
- Prepare the Salisbury Steak Mixture: In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until just combined.
- Shape the Steaks: Form the mixture into four equal patties, about 1-inch thick.
- Cook the Steaks: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until browned. Remove the patties and set aside.
- Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, add beef broth, garlic powder, and onion powder. Bring to a simmer while scraping up any bits stuck to the pan. Combine cornstarch with cold water to form a slurry, then stir into the gravy to thicken.
- Return the Steaks: Place the Salisbury steaks back in the skillet, spooning gravy on top. Cover and let simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
- Prepare the Mashed Potatoes: Peel and chop the potatoes. Boil in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and return to the pot.
- Mash the Potatoes: Add butter and milk to the drained potatoes. Mash until smooth, seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Serve and Enjoy: Plate the creamy mashed potatoes, top with Salisbury steak, and spoon gravy over everything. Garnish with parsley.
Notes
For extra flavor, sauté your chopped onion in the skillet before adding it to the meat mixture. Consider adding a splash of beef broth into the meat mix for succulence.
