Description
Indulge in the comfort of creamy cheesy scalloped potatoes, the perfect blend of tender potatoes, rich cream, and melty cheese—ideal for family gatherings and cozy dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large Potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet recommended)
- 2 cups Heavy Cream
- 2 cups Sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated
- 1 medium Onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves Garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons Butter (for greasing and making the sauce)
- 2 tablespoons Flour (for thickening the sauce)
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- Optional: Paprika for garnishing
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant.
- Stir in the flour and whisk continuously until golden—about 1 minute. Gradually pour in the heavy cream, whisking until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper, and remove from heat.
- Begin layering the sliced potatoes, onions, and cheese in the greased baking dish. Pour half of the cream sauce over the first layer.
- Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with the remaining sauce and a sprinkle of cheese on top.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Garnish with a dusting of paprika if desired.
Notes
Choose Yukon Gold for a creamy texture or Russet for fluffiness. Don’t rush the sauce; a well-thickened sauce is crucial for consistency.
