Description

A creative twist on breakfast, this Sausage Breakfast Pizza combines the hearty flavors of sausage and eggs with gooey cheese on a crispy crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 oz (1 link) sweet Italian sausage
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 onion, finely diced
  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce
  • 3 oz shredded fontina cheese
  • 2 oz shredded pecorino romano cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 recipe artisan pizza dough (one 15 oz dough ball)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 500°F with a pizza steel or stone inside for 45 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat with olive oil until browned and crispy (about 10-12 minutes). Remove and drain.
  3. Caramelize the onions in the same pan, reducing heat to medium, and sauté until softened (about 10 minutes), then continue cooking until golden brown (another 10 minutes).
  4. Prep the eggs by cracking them into small bowls and seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Shape the dough into a disk on a floured surface, leaving a 1-inch thick lip around the edges, adjusting to a 12-inch circle.
  6. Assemble the pizza by spreading pizza sauce over the dough, adding cheese, sausage, and onions.
  7. Add the eggs by creating small wells and cracking an egg into each.
  8. Bake the pizza on the hot steel or stone for 8-10 minutes until cheese is melted and eggs are cooked.
  9. Cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy crust, use a preheated cast iron skillet. Experiment with different toppings and substitutions for a personalized touch.
