Description

A delightful twist on the classic grilled cheese, featuring sweet pears, apples, and caramelized onions with sharp cheddar cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Black pepper (to taste)

Instructions

  1. Begin by caramelizing the onions. Melt 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions alongside a pinch of salt. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become golden and soft.
  2. Pour in the balsamic vinegar and let it cook for another 2-3 minutes. Once done, remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  4. Layer your grilled cheese: On two slices of sourdough, sprinkle half of the cheddar cheese. Add the caramelized onions evenly, followed by the apple and pear slices. Top with the remaining cheddar cheese and cover with the other two slices of bread.
  5. Place one sandwich in the skillet, grilling for about 4-5 minutes or until golden brown. Carefully flip with a spatula and grill the other side for another 4-5 minutes, making sure the cheese melts fully.
  6. Repeat the grilling process for the second sandwich.
  7. Once cooked, remove the sandwiches, let them cool for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on the fruit before layering. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 2 days.
