Description

These Orange Cream Scones are a delightful twist on traditional scones, infused with vibrant orange zest for a refreshing flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tbsp orange zest (about the zest of 1 large orange)
  • 1/2 cup cubed cold butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream (plus more for brushing)
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 Tbsp melted butter (for glaze)
  • 11 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)
  • 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tsp orange zest (optional for extra flavor)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease lightly with cooking oil.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest until well combined.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with pieces about the size of peas.
  4. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined; be cautious not to overmix.
  6. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut the dough into 8 equal triangles.
  7. Place the scones onto the prepared baking tray, ensuring they are spaced apart. Brush the tops with a bit of heavy cream for a golden finish.
  8. Bake for 15-16 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
  9. While the scones cool, prepare the glaze by mixing melted butter, powdered sugar (start with 1 cup), vanilla extract, orange juice, and optional orange zest. Adjust thickness by adding powdered sugar as necessary.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones and enjoy!

Notes

For the best results, use cold butter and avoid overmixing the dough.
