Description
These Orange Cream Scones are a delightful twist on traditional scones, infused with vibrant orange zest for a refreshing flavor.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 Tbsp orange zest (about the zest of 1 large orange)
- 1/2 cup cubed cold butter
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (plus more for brushing)
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 3 Tbsp melted butter (for glaze)
- 1–1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for glaze)
- 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 tsp orange zest (optional for extra flavor)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease lightly with cooking oil.
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and orange zest until well combined.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, with pieces about the size of peas.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together the egg, sour cream, heavy cream, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined; be cautious not to overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and pat it into a 1-inch thick circle. Cut the dough into 8 equal triangles.
- Place the scones onto the prepared baking tray, ensuring they are spaced apart. Brush the tops with a bit of heavy cream for a golden finish.
- Bake for 15-16 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown.
- While the scones cool, prepare the glaze by mixing melted butter, powdered sugar (start with 1 cup), vanilla extract, orange juice, and optional orange zest. Adjust thickness by adding powdered sugar as necessary.
- Drizzle the glaze over the cooled scones and enjoy!
Notes
For the best results, use cold butter and avoid overmixing the dough.
