- 1 cup Semolina (Rava)
- 1 cup split peas (for Sambar)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 green chili, chopped
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Water as needed
- Oil for cooking
- Fresh coriander for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
- Heat some oil in a pan. Add mustard and cumin seeds, allowing them to splutter.
- Once they pop, toss in the chopped onions and green chili. Sautรฉ until the onions turn translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes to the pan and cook until they soften.
- Stir in the split peas, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and sautรฉ for a few minutes. Gradually add water, cover, and let it simmer until the peas are fully cooked.
- Combine the Semolina with water in a separate bowl to create a smooth batter, then let it rest.
- Take a baking dish and layer the prepared sambar stew at the bottom. Spread the semolina batter evenly on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes or until the top is golden.
- Garnish with fresh coriander before serving.
Notes
For best results, soak split peas beforehand for even cooking. Feel free to get creative with added vegetables or spices.
