Description

Hearty and comforting German Potato Dumplings, also known as Kartoffelknödel, perfect for family dinners or festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds potatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • Butter (for serving)
  • Gravy (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Begin by peeling and boiling the potatoes until tender. Drain and let cool slightly.
  2. Once slightly cooled, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes with flour, egg, salt, and nutmeg (if desired). Stir until a cohesive dough forms.
  4. Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a ball.
  5. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil.
  6. Carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling water, cooking them until they float—about 5-7 minutes.
  7. Once they float, remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and drain.
  8. Serve them warm, drizzled with butter and gravy on the side if desired.

Notes

Ensure potatoes are fully cooked and well-mashed. Add more flour if the dough feels too sticky.
