Description
Hearty and comforting German Potato Dumplings, also known as Kartoffelknödel, perfect for family dinners or festive gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds potatoes
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- Butter (for serving)
- Gravy (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Begin by peeling and boiling the potatoes until tender. Drain and let cool slightly.
- Once slightly cooled, mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the mashed potatoes with flour, egg, salt, and nutmeg (if desired). Stir until a cohesive dough forms.
- Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a ball.
- Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil.
- Carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling water, cooking them until they float—about 5-7 minutes.
- Once they float, remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and drain.
- Serve them warm, drizzled with butter and gravy on the side if desired.
Notes
Ensure potatoes are fully cooked and well-mashed. Add more flour if the dough feels too sticky.
