Description

These arepas with gooey mozzarella cheese are a comforting dish from Latin America, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups masarepa
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese, grated
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the masarepa and a pinch of salt. Gradually pour in warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Incorporate Cheese: Gently fold in the grated mozzarella and melted butter until everything is well blended.
  3. Shape the Arepas: Divide the dough into equal portions, and shape each into a round disc, about 1/2 inch thick.
  4. Preheat Cooking Surface: Heat a grill or skillet over medium heat until it’s hot.
  5. Cook Arepas: Place your shaped arepas on the hot surface. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and develop a slight crisp.
  6. Serve: Enjoy these warm, adding your favorite toppings like avocado, shredded beef, or even a drizzling of hot sauce.

Notes

For leftovers, allow arepas to cool completely before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze separated with parchment paper.
