Description

A comforting and nostalgic dessert made with day-old bread, soaked in custard and topped with a homemade vanilla sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups cubed day-old bread (white or brioche)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare a 9×13 inch baking dish by greasing it with butter or non-stick spray.
  3. Arrange the cubed bread into the prepared baking dish and sprinkle raisins on top if using.
  4. Whisk the eggs in a large mixing bowl until fully blended.
  5. Mix the whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg into the bowl and whisk until combined and smooth.
  6. Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread, ensuring each piece is soaked.
  7. Let the mixture sit for about 10-15 minutes.
  8. Bake for 40-45 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.
  10. Whisk together powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a separate bowl to make the vanilla sauce.
  11. Serve warm with a drizzle of vanilla sauce.

Notes

Bread choice is crucial—stale bread works best. Feel free to substitute raisins with other dried fruits or chocolate chips for variety.
