Description

A delightful twist on a classic favorite, combining chocolate chip cookies with fluffy cinnamon roll dough.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup whole milk (room temperature)
  • 1 egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract
  • Tangzhong
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 8 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 1/8 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 1 ounce cream cheese (cold)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract

Instructions

  1. Combine 1/4 cup of flour and 3/4 cup of water in a mixing bowl to create a tangzhong, then let it cool.
  2. Add the instant yeast, sugar, sea salt, heavy cream, whole milk, egg, and vanilla to the cooled tangzhong and mix.
  3. Gradually mix in the remaining flour until a soft dough forms, then knead in the softened butter.
  4. Let the dough rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.
  5. Cream together the room-temperature butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy for the cookie dough filling.
  6. Beat in the egg and vanilla, then fold in the flour, salt, baking powder, and chocolate chips.
  7. Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle and spread the cookie dough filling over it.
  8. Roll the dough tightly into a log, slice, and place slices in a prepared baking dish.
  9. Bake until golden and cooked through, approximately 20-25 minutes.
  10. Whip together the frosting ingredients until smooth and spread over warm rolls.

Notes

For a variation, use white chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips or add nuts for extra crunch.
