- 1/2 cup light brown sugar (packed)
- 1/8 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg (room temperature)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1 ounce cream cheese (cold)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or extract
Instructions
- Combine 1/4 cup of flour and 3/4 cup of water in a mixing bowl to create a tangzhong, then let it cool.
- Add the instant yeast, sugar, sea salt, heavy cream, whole milk, egg, and vanilla to the cooled tangzhong and mix.
- Gradually mix in the remaining flour until a soft dough forms, then knead in the softened butter.
- Let the dough rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 60 minutes.
- Cream together the room-temperature butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until fluffy for the cookie dough filling.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla, then fold in the flour, salt, baking powder, and chocolate chips.
- Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle and spread the cookie dough filling over it.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log, slice, and place slices in a prepared baking dish.
- Bake until golden and cooked through, approximately 20-25 minutes.
- Whip together the frosting ingredients until smooth and spread over warm rolls.
Notes
For a variation, use white chocolate instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips or add nuts for extra crunch.
