- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup white cheddar cheese, shredded
- 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, roughly 1 hour.
- Caramelize the onions: During the rise, cook onions slowly in olive oil over low heat until golden brown, about 20 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Preheat oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Shape the dough: Punch down the risen dough and move it to a greased baking sheet, pressing it into a rectangular shape.
- Prepare toppings: Use your fingers to make dimples in the dough. Top it with caramelized onions, garlic, rosemary, and shredded white cheddar. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Second rise: Let the dough rest for another 20-30 minutes.
- Bake: Cook for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown. Allow it to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Store leftovers wrapped in plastic wrap or aluminum foil at room temperature for 2-3 days. For longer storage, freeze as needed.
