Description

A creamy, golden gratin featuring sweet butternut squash, fragrant sage, and melted cheese, perfect for chilly evenings and festive gatherings.


Ingredients

Scale
  • About 2 pounds butternut squash
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • Fresh sage leaves
  • 1 cup Gruyère or Parmesan cheese, shredded
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel the butternut squash and slice it into thin rounds.
  3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  5. Stir in the fresh sage for another minute.
  6. Layer half of the sliced butternut squash in a greased baking dish, seasoning with salt and pepper.
  7. Pour half of the heavy cream over the squash and sprinkle generously with cheese.
  8. Repeat with the remaining squash, cream, and cheese.
  9. Finish with a layer of bread crumbs and extra cheese if desired.
  10. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the top is golden and the squash is tender.
  11. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. This dish can be frozen before baking.
