Description

Hamburger steaks with onion gravy are a delicious, comforting dish perfect for family dinners or special occasions. This savory meal combines juicy hamburger patties served with a rich and flavorful onion gravy, making it a satisfying and hearty choice. The gravy is made with caramelized onions, beef broth, and seasonings, adding depth to the already tasty hamburger steaks.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef

1/4 cup breadcrumbs

1/4 cup milk

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, minced

1 egg

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

2 tbsp butter

1 medium onion, sliced

1 cup beef broth

1 tbsp flour

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

1/4 tsp thyme

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the hamburger steaks: In a bowl, mix together the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Shape the mixture into 4 equal-sized patties.
  • Cook the patties: Heat a generous splash of olive oil in a sizable frying pan over moderate-high heat. Introduce the patties into the pan and let them sizzle for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they achieve a golden-brown crust and are thoroughly cooked inside. Once cooked, carefully transfer the patties from the skillet and place them aside to rest.
  • Make the onion gravy: In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onions become soft and caramelized. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for another minute, stirring constantly.
  • Add the beef broth and seasoning: Slowly incorporate the beef broth while continuously stirring to achieve a velvety smooth consistency for the gravy. Then, stir in Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle simmer, cooking for an additional 3-5 minutes, or until the gravy thickens to your desired texture.
  • Combine: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the patties. Simmer for another 3-4 minutes to heat the steaks through.
  • Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy, and enjoy!
