Description

This hearty and comforting Hamburger Potato Casserole combines tender potatoes, seasoned ground beef, and gooey cheese for a perfect family meal. It’s an easy-to-make casserole that brings all the best flavors together in one dish, making it a great option for weeknight dinners or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat and add the diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onion is soft and fragrant.
  • Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and thyme (if using). Mix well and remove from heat.
  • In a 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom.
  • Spread half of the beef mixture on top of the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Repeat the layering process: add the remaining potatoes, followed by the remaining beef mixture, and top with the rest of the cheese.
  • Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option instead of ground beef.
  • For extra flavor, add a layer of sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers to the casserole.
  • You can prepare this casserole in advance and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven for best results.
