Description
Delightful and addictive air-fried onion rings that are crunchy on the outside and tender inside.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large onions
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 large egg (optional)
- 1 cup buttermilk
Instructions
- Prep the onions: Start by peeling your onions and slicing them into thin rings, approximately ¼ inch thick.
- Soak in buttermilk: Place the sliced onions in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes to enhance flavor and texture.
- Make the coating: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
- Coat the onion rings: Remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing any excess liquid to drip off. Dip each ring into the flour mixture, ensuring they are coated thoroughly. Give them a gentle shake to remove excess flour.
- Preheat the air fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes ahead of cooking.
- Air fry the onions: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Arrange the onion rings in a single layer without overlapping. It’s okay to spray the tops lightly with more cooking spray. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Cool and enjoy: Carefully take out the crispy onions and let them cool slightly on a wire rack for the optimal crunch before serving.
Notes
For a vegan option, skip the egg and soak the onions in buttermilk longer. Experiment with different spices for unique flavors.
