Description

Chilaquiles are a traditional Mexican dish made with crispy tortilla strips smothered in salsa, cheese, and fresh garnishes, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 corn tortillas (cut into strips or triangles)
  • 1 cup salsa (red or green variety)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or queso fresco)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • Oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Begin by cutting the corn tortillas into your preferred shape – strips or triangles.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the tortilla pieces until they’re crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Carefully drain them on paper towels.
  3. Pour in your salsa and bring it to a gentle simmer.
  4. Toss the crispy tortillas into the salsa, ensuring each piece is nicely coated.
  5. Immediately sprinkle shredded cheese on top and let it melt.
  6. Serve hot, garnishing with sour cream, chopped onion, cilantro, and avocado slices.

Notes

For a healthier option, consider using baked tortilla chips instead of frying. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, but keep the salsa separate to maintain crispiness.
