Description
Chilaquiles are a traditional Mexican dish made with crispy tortilla strips smothered in salsa, cheese, and fresh garnishes, perfect for any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 corn tortillas (cut into strips or triangles)
- 1 cup salsa (red or green variety)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or queso fresco)
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/4 cup chopped onion
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 avocado, sliced
- Oil for frying
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Begin by cutting the corn tortillas into your preferred shape – strips or triangles.
- Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Fry the tortilla pieces until they’re crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Carefully drain them on paper towels.
- Pour in your salsa and bring it to a gentle simmer.
- Toss the crispy tortillas into the salsa, ensuring each piece is nicely coated.
- Immediately sprinkle shredded cheese on top and let it melt.
- Serve hot, garnishing with sour cream, chopped onion, cilantro, and avocado slices.
Notes
For a healthier option, consider using baked tortilla chips instead of frying. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days, but keep the salsa separate to maintain crispiness.
