Description

Delightful Asian street food-inspired steamed buns filled with savory ground beef, perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • Cooked vegetables (optional, for filling)
  • Steamed greens (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm water while mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth. Cover it with a cloth and let it rise for 1 hour.
  2. Prepare the Filling: In a separate bowl, mix the ground beef with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, minced garlic, ginger, and chopped green onion.
  3. Shape the Buns: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small pieces. Roll each piece into a flat circle.
  4. Fill and Seal: Place a spoonful of the beef mixture in the center of each circle. Carefully fold the dough over the filling, pinching it to seal all the goodness inside.
  5. Final Proof: Arrange the bao buns on a parchment-lined steaming rack. Let them rise for another 30 minutes to become fluffy.
  6. Steam: Steam the buns in a steamer basket for about 10-15 minutes, until they are puffed and cooked through.
  7. Serve Warm: Enjoy your Bao Buns with steamed greens or a drizzle of extra soy sauce.

Notes

These buns are best enjoyed warm. Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
